Spring Equinox: Embracing the Balance
As the Earth tilts once more toward the sun, the Spring Equinox arrives, ushering in a moment of balance — a quiet dance between light and shadow.
This equinox, like its winter counterpart, holds within it a poetry of contrasts: warmth and coolness, day and night, growth and rest. The moments of perfect equilibrium when day and night are equal are a reminder that even in the most fleeting moments, balance can be found.
The equinox carries with it the spirit of both apricity and umbrosity, each playing its part in the intricate waltz of seasons. Apricity, the warm embrace of the sun, begins to stretch longer across the sky, bringing us the promise of new beginnings. As the light gently nudges away the darkness, it offers us a quiet reassurance. The warmth we’ve longed for, even in the coldest months, returns slowly but steadily.
Yet, alongside this growing light, there is umbrosity, still lingering in the shadows. As the light pushes forward, there are still pockets of darkness, hiding beneath trees or spreading across the earth. Umbrosity reminds us that growth is never linear. Spring Harmony
Spring is a season of awakening, and, as we discussed in our Spring Growth blog, naturally calls us to plan, set intentions, and bring forth what we dreamed of during the quieter months. In traditional Chinese medicine, spring is associated with the liver, the organ that governs planning, decision-making, and the smooth flow of energy. The liver’s energy is outward and expansive, urging us to set new goals, initiate projects, and take bold steps forward.
However, spring’s vibrant energy can sometimes lead to a tendency to overdo it.
The liver’s power to plan can easily transform into a drive to accomplish too much, too quickly. It is a season where we must be mindful of our impulses to push forward without pause, especially when we feel the surge of growth all around us. The potential for imbalance arises when we become overly ambitious, neglecting the need for rest and reflection as we rush into action.
To stay in harmony with the season, it’s important to listen to the cues of your body. Spring is a time to honor the liver by supporting its energy with nourishing foods, mindfulness practices, and grounding.
Embrace the Light
Bitter greens, fresh herbs, and cleansing foods can help support the liver’s vitality, while moments of quiet, self-care, and reflection can help us maintain a sense of balance. This is a season to harness the power of new beginnings without losing sight of our need for inner harmony.
The Spring Equinox invites us to step into the growing light, but to never forget the quiet strength of the shadows that have carried us through the darker months. As the Earth shifts toward longer days, we are reminded that light doesn’t overshadow darkness — it simply coexists, allowing both to guide us toward growth, transformation, and renewal.
Just as the day and night briefly stand in perfect harmony, so too can we find balance within ourselves.
